I had this post written almost immediately, even though this is the week 3 theme for Advent. I decided to post it this week because God gave me too many signs to just ignore it. Joy had been on my mind the last several weeks because I have been wearing this on my wrist/neck (It’s a special charm that can be put on different pieces of jewelry).
JOY. For me, Joy is not just a Christmas word, it’s a mission for my life.
You may have heard the acronym that you can use with the word:
Jesus Others Yourself
It’s such a fitting way to live out our days, isn’t it? Even when I struggle to do it on a daily basis, starting my day out with conversation with God puts everything into perspective. Starting each day with Jesus is the best way to take care of ourselves. We cannot be a servant to others when we ourselves are not right with God.
Starting with Jesus is a reminder of the mission we have to go and make disciples, which directs us to the “O” in the acronym. It’s not always easy, but when we treat each others with kindness and love, Jesus shines through us.
When we put Jesus and others before ourselves, we are taken care of. It’s amazing to me how God blesses me with His Word and the interactions with others.
Time may be fleeting, especially in this season, but the Lord’s joy is and always will be present.
A few days later I went to finish this post and received a beautiful ornament in the mail. Here is what it looked like:
That word, “Joy” popped up again.
“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’ – Luke 2:10-11
Clearly, God is reminding me what this season is all about.
In the midst of heartache in my own life, our country and throughout the world, Jesus has won the victory and given me the only joy which can sustain me.
