I learned something new as I put together this post. I was trying to think of a Christmas song that highlighted the act of love which God gave us through His son. Every religious Christmas song shares that in one form or another, but The title, “Love Came Down at Christmas” came to my mind and I discovered it was a poem before it was a song:
“Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, Love Divine,
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and Angels gave the sign.
Worship we the Godhead,
Love Incarnate, Love Divine,
Worship we our Jesus,
But wherewith for sacred sign?
Love shall be our token,
Love shall be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.” – Christina Rossetti
These words reminded me of 1 John 4:8 – “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
We talk about hope, joy and peace, but the over-reaching theme in this season and in our lives is the ungraspable love that comes from the Father through his Son, Jesus Christ. It envelops us in a way we can’t even comprehend. It’s a love that is so powerful that is is hard to put into words.
Which Christmas song/hymn is your favorite, which expresses the love given to us through this baby boy, Jesus?
