Names of Jesus Day 35: Sun of Righteousness

We are in Holy Week. For me, it’s usually a quiet work week, which is ironic, considering I work in a church setting. But I appreciate the time to meditate and reflect on the events that take place in the earthly life of Jesus and his followers. This passage from the Old Testament shares a message with conveys God’s power. But it also states the truth and the revealing of why God sent his Son to us. “’Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘Not a root or…

Names of Jesus Day 34: King

The Coming of Zion’s King 9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!     Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you,     righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey,     on a colt, the foal of a donkey. – Zechariah 9:9, NIV Tomorrow we celebrate Palm Sunday as Jesus enters Jerusalem. And though he rides on a lowly donkey, he is treated and worshipped as King. It’s a glorious picture, but a stark contrast of what is to come as we observe later days in Holy Week worship. Thankfully we know that Easter is coming and Jesus is our King now and always. "Names of Jesus" Click on the link above to see this word cloud…

Names of Jesus Day 32: Cornerstone

Two days in a row, God is speaking to me through this blog post. Today’s name for Jesus, Cornerstone, reminds me of a song, which I just sang with fellow ministry servants at a meeting this morning. 6 “For in Scripture it says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.’” – 1 Peter 2:6, NIV 16 “So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.” – Isaiah 28:16,…

Names of Jesus Day 31: Mediator

We are at Day 31 of my Lenten series on the Names of Jesus. At the same time, I am on day 3 of a blog challenge, where I have been asked to excite people in conversation about a hot button issue or topic. I certainly don’t believe in coincidences, but that God provides opportunities such as this one to pursue a topic of conversation. Today’s name for Jesus is mediator. (See what I mean about an opportunity?) A light bulb has gone off for me here, as I realize that framing this conversation with God’s Word, makes it much easier to step out. Google shares this definition of the word, mediator: a person…

Names of Jesus Day 30: Prophet

“As Prophet, Christ… 1. preached personally during His life on earth, validating His word with miracles, especially His own resurrection;” Taken from Luke 24, after Jesus has risen from the dead – “Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, ‘What are you discussing together as you walk along?’ They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named…

Names of Jesus Day 29: Truth

The most quoted verse from this passage is verse 6, but as I took a closer look at the verses before and after it, I realized the message was even more powerful. “’Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord,…

Names of Jesus Day 28: Alpha & Omega

12 “’Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. 14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.'”  Revelation 22:12-14, NIV When I think about time and eternity, my head starts to spin. My capacity to understand that God has always been, is limited. At the same time, knowing that no matter how much time passes, that Jesus is with us ALWAYS, is a thought that bring me much peace.…

Names of Jesus Day 27: Sanctuary

Lord prepare me To be a sanctuary Pure and Holy Tried and True With thanksgiving I’ll be a living Sanctuary for you. This song is talking about being a place of worship in our hearts for the Lord to dwell in. But when I think of this song, I see all the traits of Jesus that I desire to have. He is perfect, pure and holy and while I never will be that, I am thankful that Jesus has taken my place. He is my sanctuary. Names of Jesus Day 26: High Priest

14 “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16, NIV  There is some really great commentary, again, which you can read if you are interested, but today, I will use my handy “Luther’s Small Catechism”,…

Names of Jesus Day 25: Light of the World

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world.Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” – John 8:12, NIV Every time I hear Jesus being referred to as the Light of the World, this song pops into my head, one of my favorites as a youth. I got to see Echelon, the band who sang it, live many times, in small and mega settings. The song is ingrained in my memory and I am so thankful for that! What I love about this name for Jesus is that He also gives it to us! ““You are the light of…
