Names of Jesus Day 24: True Vine

I love the imagery of this passage. Jesus is the vine and God the Father is the gardener, taking care of the vine and all the branches. We are the branches, which are connected to the Vine and taken care of by the gardener. Without Jesus, we can accomplish nothing. But with belief in Jesus Christ and God the Father we are able to bear the fruit of His love.  “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word…

Names of Jesus Day 23: Son of God

These last few posts, I’ve not made time to write first thing in the morning and have leaned heavily on the Scripture to share what I wanted to say in the post. God definitely knew that and provided all that was needed in each passage from His Word! 13 “When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ 14 They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15 ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ 16 Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of…

Names of Jesus Day 22: Bread of Life

I love when the Scripture speaks everything I wanted to say! “When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?’ 26 Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.’ 28 Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’ 29 Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this:…

Names of Jesus Day 21: Stumbling Block

So many good Scriptures for today’s thoughts! A lot of good re-learning for me too! 14 “And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” – Isaiah 8:14, ESV Why would Jesus be considered a Stumbling Block? This article reveals a little more context: “There were two significant truths of Jesus’ ministry that created the conflict: the lack of His militaristic triumph over the Roman Empire, and His pattern of spiritual conduct that contradicted their existing religious system. Both in the flesh and in the Spirit, Jesus did…

Names of Jesus Day 20: Lord of Lords

I didn’t get to the post yesterday. It’s gonna bother me because I am one of those people that likes things organized. And Day 19 will be missing from the order. But I also understand that I can’t always do everything and yesterday was one of those days where I saw my plate filling up faster than I could control. I recognized that I wasn’t going to get everything done that I wanted to, so instead I took the evening off and rested. Thankfully, God is still God and provides another day for me to honor His name. “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords,…

Names of Jesus Day 18: Savior

“Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word.42 They said to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.’” – John 4:39-42 This passage is the end of the story of the Woman at the Well. I would encourage you to go back and read the…

Names of Jesus Day 17: Deliverer/Redeemer

I love how New Testament writers reference the prophecies of the Old Testament writers and prophets. “I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26 and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written: ‘The deliverer will come from Zion;     he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. 27 And this is my covenant with them     when I take away their sins.'” Romans 11:25 – 27 **************** “’The Redeemer will come to Zion,     to those in Jacob who repent of their…

Names of Jesus Day 16: Angel of God

I learned much in my study of this name of Jesus. Angel of God has both a catholic and protestant perspective, for which I lean to the latter. Apparently, it’s a much discussed topic. 15 “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots…

Names of Jesus Day 15: Branch

So much good, rich language in this Scripture passage, which foreshadows the promised messiah to come! The Branch From Jesse 11 “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;     from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. In this passage, Jesus is described as a Branch. When you think about the imagery of a tree,  the branches extend from the stump/trunk. In this instance, Jesus human lineage is from the line of David, son of Jesse. “…from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” – verse 11b I again turn to the commentary, which provides additional background information, to enhance the context. 2 The Spirit of the Lord will…

Names of Jesus Day 14: Christ/Messiah

These names of Jesus mean the same thing, but come from two different languages. A quick language lesson: Christ (Greek) /Messiah (Hebrew) – “the Anointed” “The woman said to him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things’.” – John 4:25, ESV Gentiles Hear the Good News 34 “So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he…
