    Empty

Sometimes it happens that I get into a funk this time of year. I am not sure why, because I truly love the season of Advent and the preparation for Christmas. The last couple of years, we haven’t been able to put a tree in our tiny apartment, so I decorate with the space we have and anticipate a bigger space in the future. But just because everything is decorated, doesn’t mean the emptiness goes away. What’s missing? I don’t really know the answer to that question. But I’ve also learned that it’s OK to feel this way. We all have moments in our lives that feel empty. We are…

    Why Such a Hurry?

Getting used to living at a quicker pace on the East Coast, or “Mid-Atlantic”, as I’ve heard it called recently, has certainly been a challenge. The faster pace is very subtle, so it’s hard to describe, but the rush that everyone seems to be in, is draining at times. And now that we are in the season of Advent and preparation for Christmas, it’s only getting worse. I used to love to drive. After all, I drove from Indiana to Nebraska and back, a few times a year, during my college years. The time I have spent on the road was enjoyable because there was time to think, time to listen…

    Kickstarter Project moves forward!

Perhaps you remember when I wrote this post about a project called: “Walking Man”. Well, now they have an official movie trailer! I am promoting it, not just because I know the people who are making it, but because it’s raising awareness of an important topic. It’s raising awareness of something that our country isn’t very good at talking about. Check. it. out. You can also follow them on Twitter, here.

    What Inspires Me? (November edition)

It’s been a few months since I have been able to do this, but I’ve got a few links to share that inspire me! Plus, it’s the beginning of my favorite month…November (the month of my birth and Thanksgiving, two of my most favorite holidays!) Great Conversation Starter:You May Never See Another Couple Full of Christ-Like Love Like This is one of those stories that shares hope in a difficult situation and makes the small stuff seem rather irrelevant. This was a great conversation starter in our home and certainly a heartwarming leap for this couple. With the Merida princess debate from a few months back, this certainly is a great…

    Coming Home

This weekend we are returning to Michigan for the first time in over a year. We are so excited to celebrate a wedding, see family and visit dear friends! But part of me feels a little bittersweet about the whole thing. As a football fan, next Sunday is a big game for our team because of this: [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4h-THRP2EA&w=480&h=360] It’s hard for me not to get emotional when I see this video of Peyton Manning because it brings back so many good memories. In the same way, thinking about going back to Michigan has flooded my mind with memories! I am excited to return, but also know that when I get…

    Thicker Skin

I had one of those days at work last week, where I had to accept criticism. Now, in most cases, I don’t mind it. It’s never easy to accept criticism, but I’ve learned that if it is constructive, I can learn from it, grow and move forward. However, when I am criticized simply because of someone’s preferences, and there is no opening for improvement, that is hard to swallow. If you know me, you know the type of work I am involved with. Many jobs require the development of thicker skin, and mine is one of them. It’s not something I have to put forth on a regular basis, but…

    When it rains, it pours…

This saying is usually in reference to a copious amount of stressful situations being dumped on you. But in this case, I am actually referring to the weather and my dislike for it at the moment. On this wonderful October day, it’s pouring rain. Really, this has been the weather this entire week! We moved to a city, Baltimore, that apparently knows how to bring the weather down in the month of October. It’s perfect, really, if you just love Poe and dark days to build up the excitement of Halloween. I know the Northwest part of this country is the rainiest year-round, but I seriously think Baltimore could compete…

    Numb

It’s been too short an amount of time since I wrote one of these posts. We are still going to and sending our children to schools and universities… We are still shopping at malls… We are still going to movie theaters.. We are still worshipping in churches… We are still running races… And those that work on military bases, whether in uniform or as a civilian, will continue to go to work and protect our country. It’s too soon to feel this way again. I am so sad for the families of the victims…they got up that morning committed to going to work, just like they did every day. Many…

    What Inspires Me? (September edtion)

I skipped July and August for this post because, well, my summer was crazy!Summer didn’t feel like it was happening until the first of August, so I wanted to enjoy it!But I’ve got some links and items that inspire me as summer ends and fall begins! This. Is. Fascinating.:Why I Called Out Joel Osteen & Joyce Meyer is a blog post from a pastor who needed to remind people that there are other gospels being preached and that false teachers exist, as we are warned in the Bible (Matthew 7:15-16). I am not posting this to judge other Christians, but the Bible does tell us that we have to hold each…

    Music that Inspires: DEMF

D.E.M.F. Not sure what that is? I didn’t either until I was introduced to it a couple of years ago. It’s one of the greatest music festivals to attend because it celebrates great music and great musicians and is a good time all around. What is it, you ask? Detroit Electronic Music Festival. (I guess it’s called Movement, but that’s not how I was introduced to it, originally.) It happens every Memorial Day weekend and it’s a celebration of all different types of Electronic Music (which trust me, I had no idea there were so many types within the genre). I am sure you have heard of Daft Punk. They…
