Music that Inspires: DEMF

D.E.M.F.

Not sure what that is?

I didn’t either until I was introduced to it a couple of years ago.

It’s one of the greatest music festivals to attend because it celebrates great music and great musicians and is a good time all around.

What is it, you ask?

Detroit Electronic Music Festival. (I guess it’s called Movement, but that’s not how I was introduced to it, originally.)

It happens every Memorial Day weekend and it’s a celebration of all different types of Electronic Music (which trust me, I had no idea there were so many types within the genre).

I am sure you have heard of Daft Punk. They have a summer hit out, right now. Well, they are some of the most famous electronic musicians.

Here’s a song from the soundtrack of TRON, which was created entirely by the duo:

One night of the festival, we got to see Fatboy Slim perform (which is a name I recognized!) It was great to be a part of a new experience, and not feel completely out of place.

It opened me up to a whole new world of music and an appreciation for those who put it together. It’s even cooler when you make friends who are DJs and participate in creating the music!

Not sure when we will be back in Detroit for another festival, but hopefully soon! Here’s the next line up…I don’t recognize most of them, but it would be fun to type them in on iTunes and experience some new beats!

What type of music were you surprised by when you discovered that you liked it?

  1. Great festival! I have some very fond memories of going there with friends during my “weeks of freedom” between the end of the college academic year and the beginning of staff training at camp. What always amazed me was not just the stuff that got you moving, but the stuff that was genuinely moving emotionally.
