As I started writing this post, I realized that the title of this song was the second half of a Bible verse that means a lot to me:

Psalm 27:1 says,
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?”

This is a verse that my grandfather picked out for me for my confirmation. At the time, it was special because he picked it for me. It still is special to me for that reason, but over the years I have found how much I cling to this verse in situations of fear and doubt.
Songs like this give me an appreciation for the ability to put great words and great music together. It amazes me, when I listen on the radio, how easily I catch on.
But in regards to this song (and many worship songs), the words have extra meaning because of my relationship with God. The imagery is pretty great too!

Verse 1:

You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light

Whom shall I fear?

God is with me and hears my prayers…
The verse that comes to mind is: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5

Verse 2:

You crush the enemy

Underneath my feet
You are my sword and shield
Though troubles linger still

Whom shall I fear?

“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” – Ephesians 6:16-17

Chorus:

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.” – Zephaniah 3:17a

The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
He may be the most powerful in the universe, but I also have a friend in him through Jesus Christ. This all powerful being has come down to be in relationship with us because of Love.

Verse 3:

My strength is in Your name
For You alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory

Whom shall I fear?
Whom shall I fear?

Chorus:

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

Bridge:
And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the hold world in your hands
I’m hold on to your promises

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39

You are faithful
You are faithful
You are faithful

“But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” – Psalm 86:15
