So much good, rich language in this Scripture passage, which foreshadows the promised messiah to come!
The Branch From Jesse
11 “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
In this passage, Jesus is described as a Branch. When you think about the imagery of a tree, the branches extend from the stump/trunk. In this instance, Jesus human lineage is from the line of David, son of Jesse.
“…from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” – verse 11b
I again turn to the commentary, which provides additional background information, to enhance the context.
2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
Clearly, the Father is with the Son. Jesus knows his father and even fears him, as he lives on this earth.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
or decide by what he hears with his ears;
4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.” – Isaiah 11:1-4, NIV
The character of Jesus is described as one who treats everyone equally with love and compassion. He cares for the poor and preaches the Gospel, for He is the Good News.
