Names of Jesus Day 37: Jesus

You knew this day was coming. How could I reflect on the names of Jesus and not include his namesake?

I love the intentional promise in each name that Jesus has been given. Each name has a powerful meaning in the redemptive work of our Savior.

21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[a] because he will save his people from their sins.”

Jesus = “The Lord Saves”

His name literally means what he came to this earth to do. If those who heard him teach didn’t believe what he said or thought the miracles had to be witchcraft.  How could they hear his name and not know that the meaning played a significant role?

I try to imagine myself living in that day. If I had heard the prophets of old, the prophecies that were to be fulfilled and then I met Jesus and heard his teaching…would I believe? Most certainly, it was not just the knowledge of the promise being fulfilled that created followers, it was faith gifted to all those who sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to the Good News he brought forth.

As we enter into the difficult days of Holy Week, my prayer is that I will reflect on all that Jesus is, in his earthly and heavenly being. As I journey with him to the cross, I hope that I will come to a fuller understanding and appreciation of what God sacrificed by giving his son the name, Jesus.
