Names of Jesus Day 8: Advocate

What does the word, “Advocate” mean to you?

Synonyms I think of include: cheerleader, champion, one who speaks up on behalf of another; significant voice; one who lends support

Scripture speaks of Jesus being our Advocate:

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” – 1 John 2:1 (ESV)

Christ came to take our place, to take the punishment for our sin, even though he never sinned. As the footnote of my Bible says, “In God’s court the defender must be, and is, sinless.”  (Concordia Self Study Bible NIV)

Only Jesus can take our place. Thank goodness that God sent his son to be our advocate!
