The Joy of Serving (#write31days – Day 26)

I was trying to figure out the best way to describe the joy I have in serving in this calling that I get to also call my job. There are many positive aspects to being a ministry professional, and I have gotten to experience several them just this week!

As mentioned yesterday, I attended a conference. In addition to the learning, it was a chance to re-connect with ministry friends, network and meet new people. One of my favorite parts of this “job” is being part of this communinity of servants. It’s a unique group who all love Jesus and understand the joys and challenges of serving God’s people and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is wonderful to gather in worship, study and conversation: a chance to build each other up and pray for one another.

Today I got to continue conversation with colleagues who were gathered together to plan a retreat. It is a wonderful experience being on a team of people, who are all doing their part in planning and preparing for an event. It’s edifying to have the same goal in mind and work towards it together. For a few of us, the conversation continued into lunch, and it was nice to enjoy the company of others, connect about ministry, but also share life together!

This is the passage of Scripture that reminds me of the joy in being part of the body of Christ and a reminder that though we are all different, God uses each of our gifts for His purpose!

“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b]11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.” – 1 Corinthians 12:4-12

What a joy to gather as the body of Christ: serving God and serving our neighbor, striving to keep Jesus as the center of all we say and do!
